Ecokaari: Integrating Traditional Craftsmanship and Modern Sustainability through Plastic Upcycling

Abstract: Plastic waste remains a major environmental challenge, especially in developing countries with ineffective waste management systems. This study explores Ecokaari, a Pune-based social venture that addresses this issue by combining sustainable waste management with traditional craftsmanship. Using a qualitative secondary research approach, it synthesizes academic literature, policies, and case studies to evaluate how Ecokaari’s “Waste-to-Wealth” initiative demonstrates circular economy principles. The business upcycles multi-layered plastic waste into sustainable, handwoven products with the use of manual equipment such as the charkha and handloom, without chemicals or electricity. In addition to its environmental impact—recycling more than 20 million plastic bags—Ecokaari also promotes artisan empowerment through job creation and vocational training for poor women and youth. Collaborations with corporations via CSR platforms also further increase its scalability. This article introduces Ecokaari as a grassroots sustainability model with profound implications for environmental conservation, preservation of culture, and economic advancement.
